Boiler Room environment

Pros

The insight into the staffing world was beneficial. Potential to make a lot of money as Recruiter or Account Manager.

Cons

They have <5 year expectancy, most don't make it 1 year....you're job is constantly held over your head along with any mistakes. They typically hire new college grads and prefer college athletes as a mentality basis and pride themselves as creating an environment as in the movie Boiler Room. The pay can be good but you have work but you have to work 8 times harder than you would at any other job for the same pay. Work/life is non-existent, if you miss work for ANY reason they will question why it's necessary and generally find a way to terminate you for not being dedicated regardless of tenure or your achievements. They also require you to mingle at bars after work with co-workers, if you do not go you are NOT seen as a team player. It's a very negative, borderline abusive, and HEAVILY micro-managed atmosphere. They even have a carefrontation policy, where if you have a problem with a co-worker you go into a room and you hash it out......these get very ugly some have resorted to physical altercations. Not a place to work if you are over 25, are married or have children. There is very little room for advancement.

Toxic Environment

Pros

Nice view of the bay

Cons

Very numbers driven. They'll call you out in front of the entire office. They tout a 'feedback rich environment' which is just their name for heavy criticism. It is a very old school company - doesn't promote new ideas, creative thinking, etc. You do things by the book, you work long hours and bring in money and they'll probably promote you. Anything less than that, and they'll make your experience miserable until you leave or you're fired. Many of the higher level managers have never worked at another company and really feel like they're 'big dogs'. Because of this, they can be arrogant, disrespectful and chauvinistic. Generally unprofessional.

Shady Practices

Pros

Put me into a good position.

Cons

The benefits are non-existing but that would take more words than I possible want to write. I am complaining about their shady practices. The supposed contract ties you so you cannot leave the contractor without switching jobs. Getting a review is almost impossible. Even if you get the highest performance rating you can get from the people you actually work for they still will give you the Milton (from the movie Office Space) run around. "Talk to 3M sourcing about your review." "No, talk to Aerotek about initiating your reveiw." No, talk to 3M sourcing about it." On and onnnn and on. The weirdest part about all of it. I think it is their POLICY to do this because they know that either you haven't been working for very long, don't have the resources to complain, or managers don't have time to bother with it and it states in your contract that you cannot switch vendors. We'll see about that.
