Pros

Amazon is a place were you work next to really smart people who are motivated and excited about what they do for a living. While our workforce has changed over the years, the culture instills a focus on knowing the details of your business, maniacal focus on the customer - even if that means short term and perhaps long term pain - because that is the right thing to do and a willingness to take risks. People who love change and deal well with ambiguity thrive at Amazon. Those who want to be told what to do and who desire a clear road map get very frustrated. Every job has it's ups and down and Amazon has had it's fair share and more, but the company continues to innovate, continues to eschew the trappings of success and the employees take pride in their work.

Cons

Promotions are few and far between. Stock is a big part of your compensation and because our stock swings wildly it can significantly impact your income from year to year. For a new person Amazon can be quite a struggle to find your place. Most groups are sink or swim and if you are hired you are expected to seek help as it won't seek you.

Pros

Because you are everything (PM, SDE, SDET, Build/Deployment Engineer, Support Engineer), you can learn a lot. But this comes at a huge cost of sacrificing your life. If you have nothing else to do in life this is a great place for you to kill your time.

Cons

Long working hours carrying a pager which will page you 100's of times when you are on call no work life balance.

Stay Away FROM S3

Pros

* Get to constantly worry if you are doing enough to keep your job * Get to Micro-manage all your subordinates, till they hate you * Get to Leverage all sorts of data to prove you can squeeze more from your subordinates * Get to monitor your co-workers output to make sure you aren't put on a performance plan. Remember the bottom 10% get PIPed

Cons

Amazon is one of the most cut-throat organizations I have ever worked for. While there are mixed reviews, I would avoid S3 at all cost. The leadership is toxic all the way down. They bank hard on metrics (even bad ones) to drive more performance and more output. If your co-workers work more than you, that actually affects your scores, as you will no longer be doing enough.
