Pros

Medical benefits are great. Thats it.

Cons

RANK AND YANK is rapid here. Rank their employees 1-5, with 5 being the worst Yank the 5s. Guess what, its 15-20% of the company. You get placed on focus/pre-pip and you have to make your manager look good when they do their manager meeting in order to get off. This effects your work life balance, because you have to stay longer at work, work weekends, and be more cutthroat than your other co-workers. (Steal cases, presentations, write documentation that is already written) I've had one on ones with my managers for years (Yes, plural managers, remember, revolving door), never had I had a performance complaint. All of a sudden, on year 4 before my RSU vest, I was placed on focus, and the date that my focus was to be completed was, you guest it, 14 days before my RSU vest. Amazon doesnt lay you off, they say your performance is not up to their cult leadership principles so they dont have to pay you unemployment. 401k is only 2% match. Amazon doesnt care about your retirement. RSUs are a joke. 3 Days a week in the office when we have been working remotely for over a year.

Pros

Everything from the interview process, to the onboarding, to the promotion process is thoughtful at Amazon. Amazon embraces the concept that innovation inherently means there will be failure and that is part of the process. There is a focus on creating mechanisms to scale good ideas and create an easy path to do the best thing for any given context. The people that work at Amazon are smart and capable by default (I have yet to meet an exception). Everyone is very willing to help and there are no perceptible political boundaries within the organization. There is truly a top-down laser focus on customer value and every decision is put up against that litmus test. This is truly a company that values data-driven decision making, adaptability based on new information, and truth-seeking.

Cons

The organization is very flat. This is actually a pro when it comes to empowerment of teams, but it tends to make things complex. The key to success is networking and building relationships. This isn't a con per say, but something to match up to your personality in order to determine if it's the right fit for you. Additionally, Amazon is a narrative focused company. Powerpoint presentations are of limited value, if any, and articulate writing is how you sell your ideas. Again, not a negative, but something to understand before applying.
