Pros

Americorps gave me the opportunity to learn about a field I was passionate about without committing to a commitment as a career. I was allowed the opportunity to take on new projects and develop my skills.

Cons

Americorps is a huge sacrifice financially. While they do provide assistance with moving and food stamps, I'm not sure I would have been able to handle the strain without the assistance of my family.

Great fulfilling work, education bonus at the end of your term is great, although I found out after I finished that it can only be used with certain loan types.

Cons

The pay is min wage, little disclosure about how education benefits can be used, promised relocation package that was never received.

Pros

AmeriCorps is a well-respected organization which does great work for people and causes in need. It is a great way to spend a year learning about a particular field and making contacts for your future career. It is the kind of job where you get back only what you put into it, so you have the opportunity to make it really worthwhile.

Cons

The pay is very low so it is best to live with relatives or other AmeriCorps members. Sometimes dealing with nonprofit employees' personalities can be difficult.
