Pros

Great opportunities for networking and professional skill building. You learn money management skills very quickly - you have to, you're going to be extremely poor for the next year. Great for recent college grads because you're with a lot of people around your same age group. Friendships easy to build.

Cons

AmeriCorps has been a great experience for me in a lot of ways, but sometimes I just feel flat-out used. Everyone in AmeriCorps is not going to have the same experience though, due to members being placed in a variety of situations. It all has to do with what the management at your specific site is like, and whether they treat you like volunteers or slave labor

Pros

Extremely rewarding to give back to others. Pay is essentially a living stipend so that is tough to deal with, but if you are looking for somthing that satisfies on a level beyond money, this is a great opportunity.

Cons

the pay is awfully tough. Often times working at a non-profit which has all of its cons... limited budgets, overworked employees...
