Its a great job if you are coming straight from undergrad. Pay is terrible but the experience is unmatched.

Pros

You WILL work like a slave, but hopefully you'll find it to be a labor of love. The most incredible part of this program/job, in my opinion, is the Team Service Project and how you get to do some great, full-fledged, hands-on community organizing!

Cons

The health package sucks, good luck if you get hit by a car. Also you're friends, family, and significant other will likely feel neglected because of the time you have to spend on work for Public Allies, especially after normal business hours and on weekends. This is truly a large time commitment.

Pros

Really making a difference in people's lives. You're far freer to move outside the system to help people and bring aid to projects as you are not an official employee of the organization with which you work, but a member of Americorps.

Cons

Work is uniformly very difficult and high stress. Organizations you work with sometimes see you as nothing more than free labor and treat you as a non-entity. Your role can change in a heartbeat, and there is very little recourse for that. Compensation is not tied to cost of living and can be very bad for large cities. Benefits are also nothing more than catastrophic care.

Great people who all have the same goal.. change people's lives.. I have been with Americorps for about a year and it has been nothing short of awesome.

Cons

The pay is not that great, but if you are looking for a place where you can make a difference, Americorps is for you. Definitely not a big deal.
