Pros
The opportunity to work for an organization that is trying to make a difference. Middle management is flexible with work schedules and time off. However, middle management isn't necessarily in the position because of intelligence. You have the opportunity to work with a lot of great volunteers for the American Cancer Society, people who are committed to the cause of fighting cancer. Position allows for a lot of individual freedom and the opportunity to work on your own ideas and projects. There is little supervision and you don't necessarily have to answer to your boss on a constant or daily basis.
Cons
Travel, night meetings, and staying up all night for fundraising events. There are meetings once a month that typically require two hour day trips. There are several weekend training sessions as well as a few staff conferences a year. Most community managers will attend two night meetings in surrounding communities a week. The surrounding communities are no further than an hour away by car. The signature event for the American Cancer Society is Relay For Life. Relay For Life is an all-night event and staff are expected to work the event all night. The day of an event, it is not unusual to go 24-28 hours without sleep.
