Pros

AEP values its engineers which is good to see. The company is undertaking a lot of change right now utilizing new 'smart grid' technology and big data analytics and it is an exciting time to work at a utility.

Cons

Technology is changing quickly but staffing changes follow too slow behind the additional and changing workloads. It tends to be after employee's are too overloaded before additional staffing is considered instead of anticipating these needs.

Pros

Decent benefits, base salary compensation is decent, bonus potential is good in most years based primarily on performance. The "players of the game" are rewarded unjustly and unequal to performance. As with any large corporation there a good and great employees.

Cons

Sr. Management is very disingenuous and dishonest creating a toxic work environment where employees are constantly guarded and always unsure of job performance even when praised or acknowledged. Sr. management conduct creates a culture of dishonesty in employees where backstabbing and additional disingenuous behavior is fostered and even supported by management for the "players" in the system. A very poor culture exists within AEP. Sr. Management "talks the talk" but they fail to "walk the walk".

Pros

Great pay and benefits; when you get down to the level of the actual "working class" employees, you won't find a better group of people - they will do whatever it takes to get the job done, particularly those who have been around 20 years or more

Cons

Work/Life balance depends on the department you work in. Unfortunately I worked in a department with zero work/life balance. Poor technological support. Trending toward downsizing and outsourcing jobs. Too many over-paid chiefs and not enough Indians.
