Pros

Smart people, willingness to innovate, and the chance to move into a new role after 1.5 years. Employees tend to stay at Amex, once they make it past the 3 year mark.

Cons

Delays with project approval, formal corporate culture, lack of opportunites for Sr. Managers to be promoted to Director.

Pros

Look, Amex is a good place to have to go every day. The work is stimulating, the people are (for the most part) bright, and the company is one of the good guys in terms of CSR and responsibility in financial services.

Cons

The matrixed, cultlike culture focuses on "band level" to a fault and decision making is frequently based on the interpretation of a senior leader sneeze vs. the right move for customers and shareholders.

Pros

Good people, opportunities to advance for top performers, flexibility in working arrangements, ability to lead projects even at lower levels.

Cons

Too many people are asked to weigh in on somewhat simple decisions, slowing down projects; health benefits are very expensive.
