Pros

During times of disaster it amazing to see how much we help people. It is hart warming to know that the services we provide are made possible by volunteers and the donations of the American public. The people who work for the Red Cross and actually provide services truly believe in the mission. Working on a disaster is not glamorous, it's hard work but seeing how we help people makes it all worth it. The best is the husband wife ERV teams that drive all over the country when we need them. Our work makes a difference to those in need.

Cons

Its a large organization and we try to be everything to everyone. At times we get bogged down and loose sight of our mission. The divide between National Headquarters, Chapters and Blood Regions is a problem. At the end of the day we are one organization yet we seem to compete against one another instead of working together. Because we have had so much turn over at the top of the organization (wonder why that is?Chairman/BOG) we keep changing course every few years and that has led to financial issues and the decrease in employee moral. At this point it can't get much worse.

Pros

Overall working environment is good. On an average working day, there is very little stress and the work culture is very casual. It is an ideal place for employees with children, as there is a great degree of flexibility in working schedules. There is paid time off, full health and dental benefits, a short-term disability program, and some flex-time for disaster operations. There is also an employer matching 401k plan, tuition assistance, and mental health counseling. Employees are able to carry over 10 days of unused vacation time, which many employees seem to favor. All major holidays are recognized, and employees can often expect to be released early the day prior.

Cons

On an individual chapter basis, there is very little room for growth in any division. Promotions are usually only available when a member leaves, and horizontal transitions are highly unlikely. For a young professional seeking growth opportunities, he/she would have to be comfortable waiting for a space to open -which could be several months or several years. There is mandatory overtime for all staff in times of disaster and caring for loved ones is usually not an option right away. There is very little training and development, and in order to be promoted into management, new employees must be degreed in that area. Vertical transitions are usually favored for tenured employees.

Pros

Life-work balance, benefits package and allowed paid time off.

Cons

I lack confidence in the company's ability toward continuous quality. The consent decree and constant warnings from the FDA make the work environment difficult and destroys morale. I suspect senior management is incapable of leading the company out of its regulatory crisis. I mean it's been 22 years on consent decree.
