Pros

The pros of working for Amtrak is the training and benefits. The salary is union wages by the hour and then, over time according to the union regulations. There is usually over time when a train is late. The benefits include medical, dental, optical, a 401K plan, life and sick leave insurance.

Cons

The job requires you to work long hours and to be on your feet all day. The breaks are according to union regulations which is taught to the employee during training.

Pros

Good pension plan if you can last long enough to get vested Free rail travel for many trains

Cons

IT Department works you to death (literally there have been several employees who died on the job and they weren't that old. They died from stress related illnesses) Other people will take credit for your work and the management isn't smart enough to tell who is doing what The management has a what have you done for me lately. You can have an outstanding achievement yesterday and if you dont have one today you are a bum Doers are not appreciated, but talkers are. If you critize the management they will get rid of you The department is hilghly political

Lack of Leadership and Accountability

Pros

Benefits but Pension was recently cut for new hires so really there's nothing extra unless you are close to retirement then the railroad retirement benefit will be attractive

Cons

If you are young ambitious and driven don't come here, it will kill your spirit. Organization is adverse to change, management avoids making decision, there's no clear leadership, finance currently has no CFO/Controller (proves my earlier point). Thinking outside the box or being proactive is discouraged, this is where accountants come to countdown till retirement
