Truly a mixed experience

Pros

People are generally good to work with. There is high effort across all teams I work with to do things efficiently and collaborate. There is a lot of young eager talent because of the turnover, while that doesn't seem like a huge pro - I've seen a lot of good ideas and innovation from some of the newest hires. Decent pay, but probably lower than elsewhere for the same skillset. At least its not Zymergen.

Cons

For a company with a history not paying its debts, missing quarterly targets, and turnover at high levels, Amyris spends an good amount of time and resources on frivolous culture building programs that are distracting at best and detrimental to productivity at worst. The company has many products in development because no single (or even multiple) product is sufficient to make the business profitable, which leads some to be overworked trying to juggle all of the different molecules. Melo has to sell Amyris to the employees just as much as the investors.

A Hot Mess

Pros

Great skincare products and a high potential for the brand to continue to succeed. The company offers a competitive benefits package and salary.

Cons

Unfortunately, this company has toxic leadership, and its staff work very long hours. When they say it’s a "fast-paced work environment,” what they really mean is that you’ll spend your days trying to finish a project well into the evening. What often happens is that someone comes up with a new idea or project (i.e. the CEO) at the final hour or on weekends. Or, someone asks for a major redo when a project was kicked off with bare-bones info. A number of projects are also kicked off as urgent and then dropped because there wasn’t enough thought put into each one. It's the kind of workplace where leadership wants to do a lot without enough resources. Each person is overwhelmed and experiences burnout because they're trying to juggle such a heavy workload and meeting schedule. You will often see the creative team working well into the evening on a regular basis because of so many last-minute changes. Everyone just looks stressed. The result is a lot of turnover so that no team really stays the same for more than a few months. Additionally, some managers facilitate a "mean girl" workplace with bullying and alienation. It tends to be a very gossipy office environment. Collaboration with other teams is difficult, and the loudest people in meetings talk over the rest. This was truly the most demoralizing job I've ever had in my career.

No Leadership + No Integrity = No Future

Pros

The majority of employees are well-intentioned, hardworking and doing their best to navigate the challenging circumstances Amyris has left them in.

Cons

Company is imploding and can no longer meet obligations to employees or vendors. The fire sale has already started. Executive leadership cannot be trusted. On a personal note, I was recently laid off after previous assurances my role was safe. There was no warning and it happened via an impersonal email. This type of business conduct is unacceptable in this day and age.
