Pros

As an engineer, Anaplan used to be a fantastic company to work for. The management was supportive, the culture superb, the pay good and the work interesting. The London office was particularly vibrant with a lot of very talented engineers and caring leaders. The previous CEO really cared about the employees and culture in a genuine hands-on way. He also ensured everyone received a generous financial share of the company value in RSU's.

Cons

Unfortunately, around the time Anaplan was acquired by a private equity company in June 2022 all that changed. Anaplan is now being turned from a creative powerhouse into a pure cash cow. The new owners ONLY care about money. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but financial success is no longer shared with the employees. The private equity team has proved time and again they will trample on anything and everything to make cash. Case in point is the complete trashing of the culture. People are now units to be removed from the balance sheet. All the great leaders and culture carriers have been pushed or have jumped. The leaders that are left are fighting like cats in a bag as they try to protect themselves. At the risk of too many metaphors, everyone is stabbing everyone else in the back. However, more worryingly, the new owners clearly don't understand what drives the value proposition. Development in the primary product is being made dormant alongside an ongoing process of moving lots of engineering to low cost locations. My advice is to find somewhere else unless you are very desperate. You will probably regret choosing Anaplan.

Pros

Good compensation. Some talented engineers still remain. Product/tech is really interesting to work on.

Cons

An acronym-obsessed executive team are implementing change for it's own sake without having any idea of the meaning of anything that they're doing, in an embarrassingly desperate attempt to shake profitability out of the business. They are narrow-mindedly sales and marketing focused. They don't care about or understand engineers, or respect that we have a technical grasp of what needs to be done to make amazing software real. They are implementing micro-managing tripe that you'd find in call centres where management have zero trust in their workforce. Their meddling is a massive distraction from getting any actual engineering done. They don't care about diversity and inclusion and are fostering a toxic environment. They respond with aggression if anyone brings up any concerns in legitimate forums. They are cancelling flexible working arrangements and working from home with no justification or evidence - ignoring the fact that engineering has been way, way more productive since we all started working from home. I would not try to join this organisation with a view to building a career here as a software engineer. Those of us left are pretty much trying to keep our heads down and hope for the best. Lots have already abandoned ship.

I appreciate you sharing feedback. I’m glad to hear you feel well compensated and that working on our platform and technology is stimulating for engineers. I too am excited about our product roadmap and the critical work you and the engineering team are doing to make our platform indispensable to customers. I know there has been a lot of change recently. The Executive Committee (EC) has been reviewing programs and pilots and updating or phasing out a few that were implemented during the height of the pandemic and are no longer relevant or were determined not to be equitable or inclusive of all employees. I strongly support an open-door policy and believe feedback is fundamental to our success. I want to learn more about your experience. Please reach out to your manager, EC member, HRBP or directly to me. - Carey Pellock, Chief People Officer

Pros

The surviving engineers are super good, they'll go above and beyond to help you. This was truly an awesome tech company to work for.

Cons

After the Thomas Bravo acquisition they decided everyone is expendable, huge layoffs and no clear mission. They now decided WFH and all flexibility that comes with it is over, one of the new guidelines is you can't have a child at home when you are WFH... and 3 days a week in the office... when normally engineering teams are geographically spread out, so you'll be in the office alone, just so leadership can feel good when they come to the office and see you. They claim they are building culture... while destroying the best culture I've ever seen in a tech company. They also decided you have to report in advance at what hours you are gonna be working. They call this flexibility... but now you can't pop out for a GP appointment and compensate in the afternoon without making a huge deal out of it. It's sad to see your direct manager having no power or information, they are just out to make a quick buck even if that means destroying the company on the long run. PS: with all the new anti flexibility rules if you are from one of the groups that benefited from that, just run.. office drinks are back for old white males
