Good company, bad engineering team

Pros

Most teams have good flexibility (geography, work hours, etc.), and are professional and enjoyable to work with.

Cons

Engineering has become a battleground of (unearned) confidence over competence, driven by a near-complete overhaul under the new SVP of Engineering. What emerged is a hypercompetitive subculture that values aggressive individualism, where collaboration is barred and morale is perpetually undermined. Veteran contributors are edged out in favor of newcomers whose assertiveness outpaces their proficiency, fostering an environment of mistrust and transactional interactions. This cutthroat ethos has bred arrogance and siloed thinking—team members hunker down in insular cliques, hoarding knowledge rather than sharing it, and technical decisions are too often dictated by bravado instead of expertise. That insularity extends well beyond the department’s walls, creating an artificial chasm between engineering and the rest of the company. The group favors its own arbitrarily selected software such as the messaging system, and in-person meetings, leaving the main body of the company’s distributed workforce disconnected and disregarded. When cross-functional projects arise, key stakeholders are sidelined as engineering management routinely minimizes the perspectives of key stakeholders and experienced SMEs. The result is a breakdown in alignment, stalled initiatives, and rampant turnover—those who push for genuine collaboration quickly find themselves marginalized or encouraged to leave. In its current state, the department undermines rather than supports the organization’s broader goals; I cannot recommend joining under these conditions.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. We’re truly sorry your experience in Engineering didn’t reflect the environment we strive to create. At Anglepoint, prioritizing people, delivering value, and improving everything are more than just core values—they’re the foundation of our daily work and our relationships. While we hope concerns can be raised openly while we’re working together, we recognize that change and growth can affect teams and individuals in different ways. We know that every person’s experience matters, and we value feedback like yours because it helps us understand where we can do better and how our intentions are felt across the company. Thank you for the time, energy, and contributions you made during your years here. We wish you continued success and fulfillment in what comes next. Best, Divya

Pros

Flexible PTO, decent, pay, the illusion of a good company culture.

Cons

Anglepoint was fantastic. I had an amazing tenure there, but then things changed when they hired a VP of software engineering who completely changed the culture the company had been building since its inception. I won't get too much into it but after pumping us up for weeks and then having the team work overtime building a proof of concept, half our team was terminated so they could bring in "more skilled engineers". They blindsided my direct supervisor and our team. It was a horrible way to go about it and I would avoid working for this VP of software engineering at all costs. You'll never feel safe wondering when they're going to stab you in the back.

We understand that the recent changes have been difficult for everyone involved. These decisions were not made lightly, and we recognize the impact they have had on the team and individuals. However, as a company, we sometimes need to make tough decisions to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the business. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Sincerely, Divya Puri (Anglepoint HR)

Pros

Anglepoint is a global company but still manages to help its employees stay close. On my team we have people across 2 countries and 4 states and we are still very united. The yearly company conference at AIM is a wonderful chance for everyone to meet people they work with and others they don't work with. The benefits are great, the flexible PTO is generous, and when managers set a good example by taking advantage of that time off, their team members do as well. Anglepoint is an amazing place for consulting, especially if you don't want to live the "away from home 80% of the time" consulting life. It is the perfect mix of professional and comfortable. No one ever feels to overdressed or too underdressed in office. The hybrid work environment available to Lindon, UT employees is ideal. The consistent team building activities, lunches, and general mental health focus never feels like wasted time. People tend to get their work done and are better off for having used some time for mental health and team building. The transparency from the CEO is incredible. Quarterly all-hands calls with the direction of the company, financial review, initiative spotlights, and Q&A sessions provide great insight into where the company is going and helps us know that we are in good hands with the current CEO at the helm. I consistently sing the praises of Brian Papay because he is so forward thinking. The understanding he exhibits of how investing in the future of the company rises above some of the (sometimes necessary) attitude of many middle managers who can only focus on what is currently on their plate; it is amazing and comforting to know that we won't just become obsolete in 5 years. The revenue per headcount because of that investment is incredible, far higher than any other "Silicon Slopes" startups or new companies. The forward-looking executive attitude combined with the focus on a safe and relaxed environment, while still being able to deliver a top-notch service sets Anglepoint apart from big 4 companies and other SAM service providers in the best way possible. The intersection of high quality services, incredible amount and depth of intellectual property, world-leading minds in the SAM space, and technical skills, all found in a relaxed work environment together, contribute greatly to Anglepoint being a career choice, not just another company. People leave Anglepoint because their skills they got here made them so valuable that they received an offer from a competing firm that they simply couldn't refuse. And in the meantime, Anglepoint pays pretty well anyway!

Cons

New execs and people coming in from the outside don't really recognize the benefits of some of what they would consider "relaxed" attitudes. It's a great thing that employees here are rarely required to work long hours or adhere to a strict dress code (exceptions are common and are always followed because we know they are exceptions), but people coming in from Big 4 and other business service providers sometimes look down on that, not realizing that those things make Anglepoint a much more sustainable career choice than any other consulting firm they have been before. Communication is often very rough. The classic issue of people not responding to emails or Teams messages persists here, but sometimes it's full on directors not responding to their own teams, even on urgent issues. Some people tend to ignore messages they don't want to respond to. People tend to get stuck in meeting-littered days even when those meetings are not actually needed, or are needed simply because someone didn't respond to an urgent email. Many internal processes are pieced together and end up requiring multiple teams to reinvent the wheel multiple times. Resource management is a nightmare because some team directors are not as forward thinking as executive management and tend to only see the workload on their plate and nothing else. There is a lot of ambiguity in a lot of people's work. Some of the processes are well thought-through, while others are basically "struggle through this as manually as possible". Technical resources and subject matter experts tend towards separation, which makes communication difficult, and blame is thrown around while the client sits and waits.
