Pros

Pay and benefits as a union employee were at the top of the scale for brewers. The large scale automated plant set up is good for technically inclined workers who also like to do physical labor. There was ample opportunity to learn and develop as a brewer, though it required self-direction and self-advocacy. Lower/Middle management was great if you weren't lazy and put in the minimum effort and care.

Cons

The company is not doing very well. It made the overall environment fearful and rocky. There are folks who don't take safety as seriously as the company demands which can put employees at risk (AB does take swift and harsh action if they discover blatant safety issues, but if no one speaks up constantly nothing will change). The success of a local brewery is highly contingent upon corporate numbers and secret plans so there is a lot of uncertainly about volume month over month. There are tons of initiatives every year that often just distract from the real work of making beer.

We’re glad to hear you found the pay, benefits, technical environment, and development opportunities meaningful, and that you had strong support from your local leadership team. We also appreciate your candor around the challenges you experienced, particularly regarding uncertainty, the pace of change, and the importance of consistently speaking up about safety.
