Pros

- Smart and hardworking people - Not running out of money

Cons

- Any attempt to give feedback to leadership is turned back on you ad your thinking as deemed as "not a good culture fit". People who report this are just told to "change their mindset" - It's usually people that have been here for a while but have not done any actual work in years that are given kudos: Most others are stuck doing the actual work but these people who scan your work and are noisy in Slack right before meetings that reap the raises and promotions. - Incompetent people without the right qualifications in leadership: The company is unwilling to pay for people who are qualified for certain roles so promote someone with little to no experience to head departments/ lead large teams. They are even more unwilling to admit that certain people's roles have outgrown them as the company has scaled. These people are the ones that stay because they could never get the role elsewhere but it leads to horribly run teams and rampant incompetence.

Pros

- Applied has managed to attract some of the most talented people in the industry with its business and snowballing with its strong team. - ICs are great to work with, hardworking, reliable, dependable, things get done.

Cons

Applied has the most toxic culture of any company I've ever worked at. I've seen people join and have breakdowns within weeks or months and leave before they vest. Management and leadership routinely dismisses those people as not a good culture fit. We have a really low amount of PTO - 15 days. There used to be an annual holiday week where the company gets the week off, but it was removed last year as it was deemed to expensive for the company's size - as if forcing everyone to work at least 50 hour work weeks and weekends doesn't already make the labour cheap enough. Employees are constantly gaslighted into believing that this is their best option here, leadership and management regularly uses negative reinforcement and intimidation tactics to get things done because "speed above all else" is all that matters. The culture is beyond saving. Only join if you can be a machine that does not care about work life balance or kindness. This is not for you. Anyone that cares about work life balance is a red flag for the company and is guilt tripped and shamed. Management across different teams frequently makes promises to reports (e.g. possibility of remote work, projects, pay) to manipulate reports and some fall through, some work out. It's a pity that this company has managed to attract such a strong team but can't manage to keep people. The amount spent on referral bonuses and recruiting could have been better spent on employee bonuses and retention. We've reached a point where the word is now out in the industry about our culture, it's toxic management and leadership, with its implications. If you are someone with years of experience, this company is not worth it. While the upside and pay might be enticing, it's not worth the impact on your mental, emotional, physical, and social health. This job gave many ICs depression; leaving made many people happier. Please, save yourself. The only time you might consider joining is if you're absolutely financially okay, the company can't use leverage against you (visas, career, or financially), and you can leave at any time. This is the only way you can easily define a style in the company that works for you. But then, why would you join? It's a saddening waste of talent and a culture that the founding team has not only destroyed but created a really toxic culture in the valley.

Pros

Applied has strong customer pull and there's a lot of potential in the market. Leadership knows how to make money, unlike most AV companies. We work on interesting tech with an extremely talented and driven team. The company is also very transparent internally.

Cons

Easily the worst company culture I've ever seen. Our primary value is "speed above all else", which has turned the codebase into a bug-ridden mess because everyone is always rushing. We have a strong team, but code quality is very poor due to the working conditions and constant demands. Teams within the company use our tools and will often skip releases because they're filled with bugs. The work-life balance is horrendous, but they act like this is a positive thing because you get to "grow". Well, I've worked at other companies that provided just as much growth without the high stress and insane hours. Many people on my team work well over 50 hours per week, sometimes 80+ during crunch times (which have become increasingly more frequent). I dread every on-call shift. On top of all that, the pay isn't even good. It's well below market. They also have a policy that you can't write your job title on your LinkedIn profile, which is clearly designed to trap you and prevent employee poaching. Take a look on LinkedIn, you'll see that everyone just has the title "Engineering". The weirdest part is that people are forced to act like they're okay with the insane rules and terrible WLB because dissenting opinions aren't allowed. Everyone seems afraid and intimidated constantly. Management is toxic - they claim to care about fixing these problems, but there has been no company messaging about avoiding burnout. There's no plan to ever let people work less than 50 hours. If they cared about people, the number 1 company value would not be speed above ALL ELSE. Applied claims to have low turnover, but it's an absolute lie. I've seen many, many people leave after less than a year. They claim these people are "self-selecting" out of the company because they can't keep up, but really it's because most people aren't willing to deal with this absurd culture for terrible pay and a pitiful 3 weeks of PTO. Take a look at the average employee age on LinkedIn - it's under 25. We are seriously lacking in experienced talent because senior folks have much better options. At the end of the day, I would only recommend Applied to new grads who are desperate to get experience in the robotics field. That's the only advantage of working here - you will learn and get good experience, even if you're miserable. For anyone else, especially people with families or actual lives outside of work, stay very far away.
