Pros

Freedom to pursue work in your passions. Security provided by large business infrastructure, while maintaining small business mentality in branch offices. ARA typically only does work that makes a difference in people's daily lives. Majority of ARA workers are top performers, so coworkers typically lift you up instead of pulling you down.

Cons

Professional growth occurs by trial and error rather than through training and mentoring. Mentoring typically only provided for senior employees. Engineers perform business development without sufficient training or the right personalities.

Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and grow as contracts are awarded. Lots of opportunity to learn how to write proposals and bring in work for the company.

Cons

Lots of opportunities to be forced into jobs you hate as contracts expire and management doesn't have the expertise necessary to find a good position for you.

Pros

There are a high percentage of engineers and scientists with advanced degrees. The work is interesting and there are a large number of small research projects. The benefits are some of the best I've seen. If you have an idea and can find funding for it, ARA gives you a lot of freedom to pursue the idea.

Cons

The majority of work is focused on the defense industry, so defense cutbacks have an impact on the business. Business processes are ad hoc at times.
