Pros

they hire a lot of young, energetic people. So if you're looking for a first time job out of the gate, these folks might be a spot to stop until you have some experience under your belt.

Cons

Aptean is controlled by Vista. It's not clear who is managing the company since there has been a revolving door of executives, none of whom has been willing to buck the system. Doing business with them is far more complicated than it should be and they do not trust either employees or customers. They riffed almost the entire sales team since they wanted to concentrate on recurring revenue and not on new customers. I understand the business model is to buy companies and then "pretty them up" and resell them, but they're not investing to grow them enough to make the sale as lucrative as it could be. There have been at least 3 CEOs, 3 CFOs and 3 General Counsel's, not to mention numerous operations executives and sales management executives in the short time I was there. With that kind of lack of stability, consider it a badge of honor if you can last a year or two - see Pros for why you might consider going there.

Pros

Co-workers, nice window views and break area

Cons

The problems with Aptean start at the top: Vista Equity Partners. Their M.O. is to try to run their portfolio companies with a handful of managers and a bunch of new college grads (known as Freshers in India). All employees are expendable, with little or no value attached to their skills, knowledge, and experience. Managers are usually clueless about products, customers, industries, and their own direct reports. Many of the experienced employees have been fired or driven away, resulting in a chaotic workplace where no one knows what needs to be done when, who is in charge of what, or where products or processes are going next. It is common to have multiple bosses simultaneously, and also common to have no boss. Getting any paid time off, including vacation, is completely at the discretion of your manager. If your project is behind schedule (as most are) you will have a hard time getting any time off. Project milestone dates are generally fantasies and projects are routinely understaffed. Aptean supposedly uses Agile software development, but the processes and procedures are so complex and poorly documented that they are really anti-Agile. The office environment is supposed to foster collaboration, but for people who actually need to think to do their jobs (this is a software company, after all) the constant noise and distractions really damage productivity. It is hard to believe that so much damage could be done to so many profitable companies in such a short period of time.

Pros

Training - lots of it for new hires. Constant change - thus, there may be promotion opportunities. Profitable - the business is making money. People - there are a good number of competent, thoughtful, hardworking people at this company.

Cons

Constant management shakeups all the way to the CEO level. The company is completely run by the financials. Don't get me wrong, businesses need to be profitable. However, long-term profitability also requires strategy, vision, and leadership which are lacking at Aptean. The focus is margins, margins and more margins. Building world-class product(s), is not a key focus of this company. Due to the constant turnover and the focus on margins at the expense of product makes providing quality support and services very challenging.
