Pros

Solid benefits. Generally respect leadership since the growth of european direct lending and real assets. Strong acquisitions recently.

Cons

Some MDs and partners were promoted because of their relationships with decision makers and not by any actual achievement. These MDs and partners tout the importance of positive culture but openly play favorites towards ‘yes’ people who curry favor and don’t provide any differing opinions. Managers create pointless projects to appear like they’re doing something meaningful. Juniors are overworked but offshore teams don’t seem to be doing much. Associates feel demoralized with no avenue to provide feedback and those who express interest in other internal roles are blackballed and shunned by their managers. Some low performing employees are not managed out but reassigned to less technical roles where they can fly under the radar. There is no transparency whatsoever but the group recently announced that promotions are on hold which removes any chances of career growth for deserving employees. The firm itself seems impressive but compensation actually isn’t.

Pros

Ares is a great firm beyond this group. I highly encourage people to seek out roles across the Ares platform outside this group.

Cons

If you’re reading this, don’t make the mistake of joining this group. Ares is a great firm, but this team is an absolute mess. Poor leadership, no skill development, and a dead-end role. Do not be fooled by the job description or possibility for internal opportunities. ***The only people who stay are the ones who can’t leave.*** • No Skill Development: The work is mindless data entry with no real analysis or learning. You’ll gain no transferable skills. • Disorganized & Poorly Managed: Leadership is out of touch, workflow is chaotic, and there’s no real structure or direction. A revolving door of chaos. • Toxic & Fear-Driven Culture: Promotions are based on compliance, not competence. Mid-levels are too scared to push back on bad decisions and too incompetent to make an impact. • Weak Team, Weaker Work Product: Most team members lack basic technical skills (Excel, PPT, etc.). I could have done this job in middle school. This group *WILL* be automated. Ares should bring in consultants to offshore / deprecate this function. • No Future Here: The idea that this role leads to growth or better opportunities is a myth. ***The only people who stay are the ones who can’t leave.***

Pros

The pay and benefits were decent.

Cons

The managers at my position were not clear about expectations and performance. They did not treat employees with respect and engaged in behaviors that I would go so far as to call verbally abusive. They used intimidation and bullying to punish employees that they believed did not "fit in," and used very passive aggressive tactics to deal with people instead of being clear and direct in what their criticisms were. Several of my colleagues reported to me that they were asked to voluntarily quit. I frequently heard managers have public conversations that disparaged people on our team. As an employee for several years that was professional, respectful, friendly and productive, I kept being hopeful that I would be able to advance my career here. However when an opportunity opened up that I expressed interest in, my manager invented false claims about my work performance which (s/he) used as an excuse to turn me down and instead hired someone from outside the company. I found this very disrespectful and unfair and it ultimately led to my departure.
