Pros

Many genuine and some of the brightest and best early careers staff, burnt out by constant firefighting. Good bi-annual bonus approx equivalent to an additional monthly salary, takes the edge off toxic bosses every 6 months.

Cons

Senior managers punch down on grades 1-4, was threatened by senior engineer that they would ruin my career in Arup with their "powerful connections" (after months of screaming abuse from them over MSTeams when I first started in pandemic) when I pointed out their behaviour towards me was unacceptable. Had no one to complain to as line manager was their drinking buddy, i.e. if you're not an Arup lifer, you're in the wrong. If you didn't join as a grad, you'll be othered and consistently given generic work to churn through while a select few get more prestigious jobs. Arup trade on their reputation to low-ball salary offers 10-15% below market, with the promise of working on prestigious jobs that never materialise. They also use sustainability and environmental credentials to lure environmentally conscious engineers over other companies but still work with oil companies in exploration - the key wording in their statement is that they 'do not work on oil and gas Extraction', so are not a great deal different to rival consultancies once you scratch the surface - typical of the smoke and mirrors and empty promises around innovation and career progression. Promotions are based on the people who spend most of their evenings and weekends socialising with colleagues only - if you like evenings with your family or own friends be prepared to be seen as 'not a team player' for not dedicating enough time to Arup outside of work.
