Pros
We get Fridays off in the summer, but this policy is currently under review, so I wouldn't count on it for much longer. Also, I've made a ton of high-level professional connections.
Cons
I had high hopes when I joined Asia Society, mainly because of its seemingly world-class reputation and high-impact programming, but, unfortunately, I've been immensely let down. On a broader scale, the organization is a sinking ship--there's no clear organizational strategy, and there's a serious communications issue between HQ and Centers (as well as Center to Center). Turnover is rampant across the organization. All of these contribute to massive issues on many fronts, including with marketing and branding, program development, new business development, talent acquisition and retention, etc. For me personally, I was promised duties and responsibilities for which I was qualified, but am primarily doing administrative work for a micromanaging and seriously disorganized supervisor. The entire office is always stretched way too thin as everything is a top priority and management continues to make unrealistic promises without considering staff workloads. As such, there is no such thing as a satisfactory work-life balance. It is a toxic work environment...senior-level staff are condescending and sometimes even manipulative. They don't listen to or seek advice from junior staff, who perform most of the work without getting any of the credit. HR is friendly, but not helpful as HR concerns go unaddressed. In my Center (omitted to protect identity), there are no professional growth, training, or mentorship opportunities, and, because the organization isn't doing well, no opportunities for pay raises in the near future...not even a standard of living adjustment. My mental and physical health have seriously deteriorated since I started working here. My advice: avoid this organization at all costs!
