Gap Corporate trickles down

Pros

Great brand, lots of changes. Nice office. Nice coworkers and leadership team (at Athleta itself)

Cons

Tons of red tape from Gap HQ, that actually hinders progress. Culture seems to encourage work/life balance but in reality, particularly when HQ gets involved, it is quite the opposite unfortunately. Little mobility between job functions. Location (unless you live in petaluma, you will probably have a long commute)

Pros

Very fun environment! Excellent co-workers who always support you and encourage happiness and work/life balance. Opportunities to influence day-to-day operations. Ideas are considered in upper-level management. Constantly growing, constantly improving, always does what is right for the customer and treats their employees extremely well!

Cons

Athleta is a new company and is working through many retail day-to-day operation fixes which causes issues with creating a standard. This way many stores have a different definition of success and standards which can make it difficult to grow within the company.

Depends on your local management

Pros

They offer a generous discount for all company stores and a great merch card to all employees, FT and PT. They are negotiable regarding pay, and fairly generous for retail- they may ask what you're expecting, and I recommend throwing out a higher number than most retail jobs. The company's ideals are great, and the merchandise is mostly legit technical gear, so it's a product worth standing behind.

Cons

I really think it depends on your local management- can really make or break the job, and set the tone for the morale of the store. If they are inexperienced, condescending or clique-y, it will make for a miserable setting. I can definitely see how the GM got the position, just wonder how many people he/she has stepped on in his/her career. Store is overstaffed, with often a dozen sales associates on duty at one time, and high pressure to hound each customer like crazy. A couple managers are like hawks, micromanaging your every move, and butting in at times where it's actually harmful to the store operations and customer relations.
