Bureaucracy at its worst!

Pros

Tons of paid time off and flexible hours in some departments.

Cons

Takes months to get anything done and they don't fire people who aren't productive. Tons of super grumpy, lazy people who show up and do just about nothing all day long. Horrible environment to work in if you are at all create and fast paced.

Pros

The best reason was getting a teaching job and educating the students that wanted to be helped. The mentor program for new teachers is nice too. They have a competitive salary. They offer lots of stipends for tutoring and other activities.

Cons

As a teacher, I truly felt unsafe. A student brought a knife to school and because it wasn't over 3 inches the student was not punished. I had a student stab another student in my classroom with a pencil in the STOMACH, and the admin did nothing because they thought they were "playing" even though I witnessed the incident. Lastly, I had a student threaten to rape me because I asked him to sit down in my classroom. The admin felt that this was something that he wouldn't act an, so he was given a slap on the wrist. It was impossible and frightening to teach there. I wish I had more support. I asked many times for the admin to come sit in my room and assist me. I had 33 + kids in a portable. It was a disaster. I left in the middle of October 2013.

Pros

They have great time off policies - 2 paid weeks off for Christmas, a week for spring break, all the standard holidays off plus a week of sick, a week of personal leave and 2 weeks vacation.

Cons

The HR department is unwilling or unable to come up with a way to offer reasonable compensation. They use some archaic metric to determine what your starting salary is and then, with the exception of across the board pay increases, there is where you will forever remain. No realistic evaluation of skills upon hire. No merit increases. This results in high turnover in some departments, and little opportunity to attract qualified, quality replacements.
