Pros

The IT systems are well run. Lots of easy to use software and easy access to needed items.

Cons

Special Education does not have enough help. The student's education suffers due to lack of adequate staffing. Support staff for Special Education is unresponsive when contacted for assistance. One Special Education Coordinator even claimed during her speech during our beginning of year meeting that sped teachers like to give up our lunches and planning periods. She claimed we are all so "giving" that we like this! The truth is Special Ed Teachers in AISD are forced to give up our planning time and lunches to meet student needs because of understaffing. We are taken advantage of and not given the time law requires for lunch and planning. It is not funny or giving the district is taking advantage of sped teachers and students.

Poor Bereavement Leave

Pros

Austin ISD does have good medical insurance, however, extenuating circumstance becomes a challenge.

Cons

-No bereavement leave. You use up any days that you have left. FMLA will not cover it, and employees cannot donate days to each other. You can either come back to work or you can get leave without pay and pay your own insurance. I had to go back to work with less than a month after a loss.
