      Pros

      You have to love teaching to do this job. If you're principal leaves you alone, you can do most anything to nurture the love of learning in your students. Austin ISD is one of the few school districts in Texas that pays into Social Security, a bonus when it comes to retirement.

      Cons

      If you're principal's philosophy clashes with yours, good luck. Very limited opportunities for advancement, unless you are friends with those in authority to provide opportunities for you. I've see too many people promoted due to friendships rather than those who are more capable.

      Unappreciated, no materials, low pay and no support

      Pros

      Coworkers support each other and share ideas.

      Cons

      Buildings are falling apart. No supplies or budget for supplies. Many supervisors are inexperienced or have no teaching experience. Promotions are given to friends. HR will reassign you to anywhere in the district that thatey cannot find a body for. Payroll has never gotten my paycheck correct, EVER. IT CHANGES EVERY MONTH and it's impossible to get it straightened out. Every 2 years, AISD changes programs and implements "CURRENT" trends, only to be dissolved in the next 2 years. Very top heavy. High paid administrator or people who supposedly support but spend their time surfing web or shopping.

      As a Substitute you have the ability to become a part of the actual staff of the school you work with.

      Cons

      Each school is different with different class management tools.
