Avalara has a lot of really talented employees and some cutting edge technologies. There's a vibrant culture of enthusiasm and passion for work, even in the satellite offices abroad.

Cons

For all its pluses, sometimes Avalara can't get out of its own way. There are some really crufty systems that make it hard to coordinate and get things done, especially cross-functionally. Private equity took over about 3 years ago. Some processes have improved, but there's been a concerted effort to minimize new US hires and to move operations to cheaper locales. India is the preferred place to hire people now, especially engineers. We've also had layoffs, layoffs, and more layoffs along with a brand new CEO.
