Suffers from growing pains but still has potential

Pros

It's a growing company so there are opportunities and potential in the market. There is recognition that Sales and Marketing are important; this is not a tech driven company.

Cons

It's probably a pretty fun place to work - if you're part of the "in crowd". It's very cliquey - and so difficult for new people to get in and be part of the team, unless you're an "Islander" then you get extra acceptance cred. The commute to the Bainbridge Island office in addition to a drive and bus ride makes for a long day. There are worse ways to commute than by ferry but factor that in when you're considering an employee's work day. The organization is divided into silos that are very comfortable with their way of doing things. Trying to bring in new processes or ideas is difficult at best - people are comfortable doing things they way they've always done them.

Pros

The company makes software that every business in the world needs, and is the undisputed leader in the space - the opportunity to grow is massive. Management is driven and very focused, employees get what they need to succeeed, and the company takes time to have fun too. It feels like Avalara is on a path to be a great success story.

Cons

Like any company growing rapidly, there are areas of ambiguity and churn. Also, it seems like some employees might not be right for this kind of environment, but that is changing. I have seen the same type of issues in every startup I have been at - you should work here if you are aggressive about your career and want to do meaningful work and be a part of something great.

Pros

In Bainbridge - lots of free foods, onsite keg, and nice conference rooms; In Seattle - great office setting now with the office remodel/expansion.

Cons

Onboarding of new CAM staff. Nothing is documented, because there are no processes in place. Internally, there are too many systems to reference to ensure the "true source." Ineffective and in-efficent. Change happens frequently and top-down information (other than "close your deals ASAP" or "show me the #'s" is what is what's communicated.
