Pros

Fast growing company that works in an interesting industry. Nice to work on a product that is about solving real problems for real businesses. I've heard it's a happy place outside of the engineering department. They will probably continue to grow successfully for the next 5 years.

Cons

The company is perpetually plagued by the inability to deliver new software products. Big ambitious projects are started, inadequately staffed, mismanaged, and then abandoned. A few months will go by, and then upper management will rename the project and try all over again. This endless cycle of creation and destruction has gone on for years, and has demoralized and gutted the engineering org. It has been like this for the past 10, and will probably be like this for the next 10, as long as they still have VC money to burn. The culture of the company is built around salespeople, not engineers.

Pros

None anymore. They are moving everything but sales to India. So good luck customers. They India team is nice. They just aren't competent.

Cons

Everything, there are no more opportunities. Unless you'reokay with lying. CEO said he was surprised our customer satisfaction was so low? You're kidding right? You've turned your back on your employees and clients and outsourced everything. You aren't listening. You demand fake orange feality while we are dying inside watching you destroy what we worked our tails off to build. I loved this company. I love my team, my clients, my job. I loved every day here. Now I'm crushed watching long term clients leave left and right because you will not listen. But hey India has a great office and culture right?

Pros

There are individuals who take their roles seriously, and serve their teams with humility and true leadership. There are some team members that take their roles seriously as professionals, making it easy to achieve common goals.

Cons

Avalara is full of incredible turnover, toxic culture, crippling politics and open drama. Managers fabricate crises to artificially 'motivate' their teams. Senior leaders focus on building their own corporate brands rather than supporting their teams, and the rest of the troubles trickle down from there. There are constant mean-spirited Internal fights and hollow posturing over resources, funds, and priorities (debate and discussion is good, sabotage and drama is not). Quite literally every individual contributor I worked with behaved as if they were about to be let go, which makes for a difficult environment to achieve just about anything meaningful. Of all the public companies i've worked with, this one showed me a new low for culture, camaraderie, and effectiveness. If you're thinking of trying this place out, just be ready for all of this, on top of the massive workloads you'll get and the constant priority and resource churn you need to navigate.
