Pros

Pros are the people closest to me on-site, as we genuinely care for each other as we suffer through the consequences of poor change in the company together.

Cons

AvalonBay is not what it was just a few years ago. Constantly looking to cut back on employees and allow the on-site teams to suffer. The company no longer aligns with core values that were once truthful. A business is a business, but AvalonBay has done nothing but focus on investors and cutting costs while their crucial employees are drowning. Employees feel worthless. Top talent giving notice week by week and it couldn't be more of a sign that the company has become just terrible to work for. With the amount of work and extra time and energy that the on-site teams are having to deal with due to these changes, some genuine appreciation should be shown. AvalonBay tends to lean on throwing a free lunch at their associates to keep them quiet.

Some Growth, No Value

Pros

When I started the pay was a few dollars above minimum wage which is good and the have a really strong dedication to office culture and having a safe space for people of all backgrounds. People are nice for the most part but no one is perfect. It's the best place I've worked as far as feeling safe and supported in some ways.

Cons

They only value you with their words and food. Working hard will only get you more work with no pay increase. All they can usually offer you is work experience without a title or salary which may work for some people depending on your situation. Work evaluation is subjective and with multiple people with differences in knowledge of policies and procedures, it can be frustrating getting the right information at times . Your work will be considered wrong or right depending on who reviews your work and how much they know which was an issue for me. Unless you share expenses with someone it will be hard to support yourself with this full time position alone. You can transfer departments with a raise that is non negotiable (like all raises) and everyone is given the same rate and it is very low. Working from home as shown me this company doesn't really care about it's employees and sees their top performers as replaceable. Even managers don't make a lot. It is not a terrible place to be, they just won't do a lot for you. Great place to work if you need something for the "meantime" though.

Pros

They do have fun office events, volunteer opportunities and the people that work there, themselves are pretty cool.

Cons

Unless you get in the right group of people from the start, you're doomed. They look for any way to fire and get rid of people just so they can instill a strong environment of fear and control in the office. They punish you if you succeed or grow to fast, and also if you are less than perfect.
