Pros

1. Employees - For the most part, every single employee believed and followed our mission, and cared for the patients we served. 2. Benefits - They were FINE. You'll get better elsewhere, but you'd also get worse. 3. Diversity of work - By the time I left Avera Health, I was doing the work of over two (2) full-time employees (this will also be a con). However, this gave me a variety of work that I really enjoyed. 4. Patients/Families - Yeah, you'll have some pretty tough people you have to deal with, but then you get some like the residents of my facility. Everything you do, is for the residents. 5. Loved the job - At the end of the day, I truly loved my position and the work I did. I think being willing to learn, take on complicated tasks will get you far. I had mentors and a team that was willing to let me make mistakes, learn and become a vital member of the Avera team. Not a lot of jobs give you that same opportunity.

Cons

1. Too Much Work - I truly enjoy the insane amount of work, but I know I was also getting paid far too little for the work I was completing. I would volunteer for tasks simply because no one else would or could do the work, and it needed to be done. 2. Pay - I was truly underpaid for all the work and knowledge I brought to Avera Health. If you're here for the money, leave now. 3. Behind the Times - I currently work for a different religious healthcare organization and Avera is running their healthcare system like it is 1980's! 4. Meditech - OOFA! Talk about one of the worst EMR systems I've ever worked with. After using Cerner, truly think Satan uses Meditech. 5. Management - I still worked here through 2023, so any new management changes, I can not speak on. I worked during COVID, and can speak on how chaotic it was. I think Avera Health, despite being the size of a metropolitan hospital system, is just run too thin (I think this is even more true after working at a metro hospital system). I think with Avera Health being spread too thin (not population wise, just distance wise), it really limits collaborative teamwork amongst management (see advice number 2 for an example I think could be improved). Avera owns too much, over too much land, I think management (particularly management in Sioux Falls), has a bit too much say about how things, let's say a small hospital 4 hours away, is run, with little collaboration. At my new organization, the hospital system is run out of two counties and services a population of over a million amongst its few hospitals and services.
