A good place to start a career

Pros

The vast majority of people here are intelligent, professional and great to work alongside. Former colleagues who have left Detica have since mentioned to me that they now appreciate the quality of the workforce here. In my opinion Detica is a good place to join as a graduate. People here are not afraid to bestow responsibility on graduates if they are up to the task. As other reviews mention, there is a lot of scope for quick progression early in your career. From personal experience, workplace issues and dilemmas do get successfully resolved once people talk things out with their line manager/operations manager/human resources. Detica has a fine reputation in the business consultancy and IT industries. A job here will generally enhance one's future employability.

Cons

People in middle grades can get a raw deal unless they're proactive about taking control of their career. I've seen people at this level of seniority leave because they weren't happy with what they were doing, and also because they were becoming exposed to some of the uglier sides of work here (poor work/life balance, highly politicised performance review system, etc). Cost-cutting measures, whilst understandable, seem to be happening in the wrong areas and are being undemocratically rolled out (e.g relatively low graduate starting salaries by market standards, reduction of standard benefits). It's quite palpable that staff turnover is considerably higher now than it was 5 years ago.

Pros

- Thrown straight in, you learn quickly - Good salary / progression for Grads - Some great members of staff

Cons

- Perks have slowly been removed - Too many promotions based on box ticking and chumying up to the right people = weak leaders.

Pros

Makes a point of hiring intelligent people, opportunities to work on some interesting projects - sadly not enough to avoid a 1 star rating.

Cons

Generally negative work atmosphere makes even interesting work a chore. Managers routinely criticise their team members without even bothering to check their facts. This generally happens in one of two ways: a verbal attack in front of other staff, or a whispering campaign within a management clique. Quite normal to be sitting in the same office as a group of managers and listening to them run down a person or project for between 1 and 2 hours (knowing that you may be the next target as soon as you leave the room). When I joined I thought I had been unlucky with my project team, but then saw exactly the same thing with my second project. A high proportion of managers have never worked at another company, and seem to lack a sense of perspective, or, for that matter, a sense of basic professionalism. Lots of large egos mean that attempts to suggest alternative designs or methodologies are often construed as personal attacks (sometimes your suggestion may be quietly adopted later). Constantly refuting malicious rumours and defending every small decision becomes quite draining after a few months, and morale among non-management is generally very low. Work/life balance is on the spectrum between mediocre and dreadful. Unrealistic cost/time estimates are the order of the day, with the project team left to pick up the pieces. Bid teams are completely unaccountable for their cost estimates, and project managers generally take the blame for any overspend. It is almost universally acknowledged within the company that the performance review/pay raise system is badly flawed; arbitrary, heavily politicised, and the source of even more bad blood between individuals. I have not suffered too much from this personally, but the number of times this has been mentioned in other reviews confirms what I've heard from colleagues at all levels of the organisation.
