Disappointing Experience

Pros

BECU gave great benefits, including health insurance, dental insurance, 401K matching (50% matching up to 6%), BeWell reimbursement, and others.

Cons

Very stressful work environment. When interviewing I was told that BECU isn't a high-pressure sales environment, but that very much turned out not to be the case. You have to sell, sell, sell, and one of your bonuses is based around how high of a balance the people you sell loans, lines of credits, and credit cards have, so you're incentivized to sell to people who will carry those balances. Also, during our ethics training, they state that banks and credit unions shouldn't use sales numbers to give out bonuses. However, BECU's bonuses are based entirely around sales numbers, which led to coworkers trying to steal loans from each other, and as well as branches trying to steal loans from other branches. Their COVID response was disappointing, too. Very paternal and what management said was happening rarely matched what was actually happening in the NFCs/branches. When I asked my manager questions about COVID response, I was told not to complain and to be a team player. He also insinuated that if I really cared about safety, I'd be more focused on selling loans to our members. You'll have to fill out forms to fill out forms to fill out forms, and if any form is even partially incorrect, you get a lowered QA score and email to your manager reporting you. On more than one instance I had done everything I needed to, but because I didn't check off on a form that I had done those things, I received a lower QA score, which in turn affected my bonus.

Pros

Nothing comes to mind as the negatives FAR outweigh ANY positives.

Cons

They are nothing like they portray. The supervisors here are mean and nasty and "lead" with intimidation and fear. They micromanage every single thing you do and are very arrogant and aloof. The sup I was assigned to was the last person I would ask a question. They don't have to actually do the job yet will tell you how bad you are at it. There is no development you are either perfect or you are gone. It has become a turnover factory because no one wants to work there as the job itself is extremely stressful. The force you to work 9, 10 hours and 6 days a week and getting PTO is basically impossible so there is no work/life balance. This is a hostile stressful environment and in a short span I witnessed several people being done dirty by them. One of the other reviews said it depends on the supervisor/manager you get and if you get a bad one they make your life hell and do everything they can to prevent you from advancing. It is very poorly managed because upper management is always having parties during the middle of the work day while others work. This is the 1st company I have ever seen that the managers do not actually work. Their sole job is to harass you. It isn't worth your health or mental health. All their systems are ancient and break just about every day. The are trying to grow before they fix the issues. Also management works Monday through Friday so they don't feel the stress you do they also can come and go as they please long as they go to their million meetings a day. They just sit on their high horse and judge.

Culture Becoming More Toxic

Pros

- Benefits are on-par with other financial institutions - Many people within the org are wonderful, caring people and great to work with

Cons

- Management has changed how they approve bonuses. We used to consistently get 100-125% of our target bonus, but that has dropped every year I've been there. They always find some excuse to not payout the full amount (ex. a couple of years ago, we were denied our full bonus amount because a different team in our division didn't hit their goals - but we had entirely separate goals that had nothing to do with each other; another example: last year our goals kept changing because our team leadership changed 4 times in less than a year and the director at the end of the year didn't like the direction that the previous director chose for our goals so we didn't get our bonus) - Raises are completely arbitrary. They have annual reviews that grade you in multiple categories 1-5. The year I got 5's across the board, I got my lowest raise ever. But my lower rankings came with larger raises. Make it make sense. Note: You can probably expect a 3-4% annual raise (which in no way keeps up with inflation) - Empire building is becoming a huge problem. Be prepared to play politics if you want to stay and/or move up in the company - HR investigates complaints against HR, so nothing ever improves in that department - Leadership pretends to listen. They'll make skip levels, but none of the feedback results in any changes - Some managers will reward you for working overtime for free (not logging your hours), and punish you for choosing not to work overtime (even though they say it's not required). There is no work-life balance and if you try to make that balance for yourself, you'll be pushed out
