Pros

No "pros" come to mind.

Cons

Work-life balance is not something your supervisors or administration have any care about. In the end, their priority is to have you see as many patients as possible. It is NOT focused on providing quality care. I focused on my patients quality of life and had meaningful conversations about their new diagnosis, disease, medication, prevention needs, etc, essentially to treat the whole person. My patients loved the care I gave them, and even still to this day attempt to find where I now practice all non their own accord. However, the continued message I received from my supervisors was to only focus on 1-2 problems per visit, no matter what, in order to get everything done in 15 patient slots (30 minutes for annual physicals/Medicare Wellness/Essence). I would constantly have to work before and after my scheduled office hours to catch-up on documentation, and it was never enough. My constant complaints about the work-life balance was on deaf ears. I was in severe burnout, but instead of actual assistance this was a siren call to BJC admin to find a way to force me out. There is also a fact that no PCP has adequate staffing to support their work. One should have a dedicated MA and a dedicated Medical Secretary for the constant deluge of work other than in-office exams, however I only ever had a dedicated MA for 9 months before they left for PA school, and never did I have my own medical secretary. Every staff member was overworked and overwhelmed, unable to assist you to their capabilities. To this effect, all contracts seem to be in violation by the employer (unless they've since removed this wording in their contracts). Pay is also not great; they lurer PCPs in with fantastical salaries that after a 2 year mark depend on excessive work hours to maintain. In my 2 years at BJC, 1 MD colleague was fired, another forced out due to their repeated medical leave needs ( a common theme amongst many BJC departments) and 3+ others I know of left due to poor working conditions and burnout. The culture here is toxic, plain and simple. Their only value is profits. They boost their patients "deserve extraordinary care" but they could care less if the PCPs are able to provide that. Diversity and Inclusion is also horrible. The 2 colleagues I have of color also left working there after 2 years, one being fired as well.

Pros

Decent pay for the COL in MO

Cons

Oh where do I begin: -terrible rates of PTO accrual -no sick leave -4 “unplanned absences” a year or you can be fired (nearly impossible with children) -if you clock in, you’re reprimanded for being one minute late - you’re a number in a huge corporate medical business. You’re treated like so. They’re motto is “everyone’s replaceable”
