Pros
Most of the people you work with are good people. The work itself is kinda cool. Railroad Retirement if you live long enough to collect. It's a union job.
Cons
You'll make decent money, but when you factor in the the amount of hours you work, being on call 24-7-365, the time spent at hotels, and the rising costs of living plus inflation it is mediocre at best maybe 18 to 25 bucks an hour. The place is always trying to fire you and really does commit wage theft. The industry in general is actively changing procedures and rules that are making the job increasingly dangerous for the employees and the public. They constantly add and change attendance policies making them even more restrictive. So, having time off is harder and less restful. The sleep deprivation and interuption, lack of circadian rythm, long hours, stressful work environment, micro vibrations from the locomotive, and exposure to fumes and contaminants make for an extremely unhealthy lifestyle. They will run you into the ground without hesitation.
