Couldn't ask for a better job in the gaming industry

Pros

I've been employed at Backflip for around two years now and have loved every minute of it. The studio management is receptive to feedback and trusts their employees to make decisions at both the game and studio level. The hours are great, as overtime is generally frowned upon by everyone at all levels, which is a breath of fresh air in gaming. A majority stake in the company was purchased by toy company giant Hasbro over two years ago, and the transition and relationship has been great. I think the future is looking bright for the company as a whole.

Cons

The studio has experienced some growing pains as they went from a company comprised of a few people sitting around the table to over 100 strong, but they are doing their best to make sure all their bases are covered and the growth is managed well. It also seems like they are having a hard time recruiting, as there isn't a lot of people in games who live locally.

Pros

Office culture, incredible co-workers, generous health benefits, extensive video and board game library, showers and bike racks in the building, perks like free snacks/drinks/beer/gym membership - this is a great place for active people!

Cons

Depends on the project and department, but in general: Inefficiencies everywhere. Unrealistic planning. Lack of meaningful feedback in reviews, lack of mentorship and documentation of best practices, making it difficult to improve or get promoted depending on the department. Departments feel somewhat separated and, at times, combative towards each other. The studio is particularly bad at killing projects that don't work, allowing them to drag for entirely too long. Muddled long-term vision, subject to the whims of upper management. Chaotic upper management decisions and seemingly arbitrary deadlines on certain projects that often leave employees scrambling and frustrated.

Pros

Good benefits, good locations, well-meaning management, Hasbro seems like a stable owner that allows autonomy.

Cons

After initial success years ago they’ve struggled to find success. After a re-org last year things are showing promise.
