Overflowing with mid-level management.

Pros

Southern Arizona's only Level I Trauma Center, transplant center and academic teaching facility. Professional staff seems to take pride in their work. The job is always interesting.

Cons

Entry-level workers (i.e. patient care technicians, janitorial staff, etc.) do not appear to take pride in their work and their apathy shows. The hospital is just dirty in general and some people act as if they are put out by having to actually work. Establishment of "University of Arizona Health Network" seems haphazard and like management is just operating on the fly at this point. $3 million was spent on "rebranding" and the hospital can't even afford to provide the staff new badges. Hospital expansion, at least in non-direct patient care departments, has resulted in the creation of unnecessary mid-level management positions, where even the existing positions were superfluous. The addition of these positions does not seem to have resulted in noticeable improvement in operations.

Pros

Promotion opportunities fare plentiful, tendency to promote from within, good 401K plan/match, good benefits (not great, but good), dedicated employees throughout the organization, well equipped facilities, well maintained facilities, fair pay.

Cons

Managers constantly pressured to do more, not enough emphasis on work-life balance, some hospital leaders out of touch with demands of front line employees, benefit costs increasing and level of benefits on the decline due to budget challenges, some departments understaffed, upper management doesn't like to listen to complaints.
