Marketing Managers Beware

Benefits are good, salary good if workload was more reasonable. It appears that the Barton Malow experience is very different for project managers, project directors, project engineers and so forth, than it is for marketing staff.

Cons

The marketing manager position in at least two offices I know of are nothing more than a proposal sweatshop. These offices chase every project that's even a remote possiblity. Most field staff have little respect for or knowledge of marketing's part in acquiring new projects. As a result, advice on whether or not to pursue is ignored. As a result, the workload expands. The workload as far as proposal production goes eliminates the possibility of getting other responsibilities accomplished and seriously encroaches on personal life. Expect to work an average of 53-55+ hours a week. Also expect to not be able to produce a quality proposal because of the insane number of proposals that are dumped on 'marketing managers'. I don't believe that upper management has any idea of what's going on in this regard, and if they did, it would be nice to believe they would do something about it.
