Pros

Relatively stable and just got bought out by Toyota so there's light at the end of the tunnel...? Big dollar company.

Cons

Selfish management who is willing to screw over their employees for their own benefit. Before the buyout in February of 2017, they bought back all the stock owned by employees at the price it was 4 years ago, not the current valuation. This rendered many employees hundreds, thousands, and in some cases around a million dollars of loss at the buyout while management walks around boasting about the European vacation they're going to take their kids on and the sports car they have their eye on. They're willing to keep people who provide absolutely no value to the company in order to save face or because Daddy's on the board while they terminate employees who have worked hard their entire career there. This "family-owned" company that prided itself on its values must only value selfishness and greed. I've never been so happy that I am not apart of a company.

Bastian Solutions Response

We are very excited about our acquisition by Toyota. They are a great company and are committed to maintaining our culture. The decision to replace the employee stock plan with a flexible service appreciation award was made 2014 which is 3 years before Toyota acquired Bastian Solutions; and at a time where there was no intention to sell the company. The stock appreciation plan mentioned within this review was a very rigid government restricted program and did not allow flexible earnings which was burdensome to hundreds of participants. The new service award plan provides an on the spot cash bonus to those who have committed years of service to our company, without the mandatory 409A regulations. This new service award plan has been very popular for the vast majority of all Bastian Solutions employees.

Pros

- The office environment is pretty casual amongst your colleagues. - There are a lot of opportunities to get your hands dirty and get directly into your work in the field.

Cons

- They don't negotiate salary. When you are offered a job and try to counter their offer, they will try to sell you on their "amazing" incentive package which will get you close to the salary that you want. These incentives are based on goals that are set by your management. The issue is that they don't communicate those goals to you. When you ask about your goals that you are supposed to meet, no one, including management seems to know what they are. Then, when it comes time for the quarterly payout, management pulls a completely arbitrary number out of thin air without any explanation as to why you received what you did. To top it off, bonuses get paid out late (by months) simply because a manager didn't have time to submit the ratings or they went on vacation and "just didn't get around to it. Pay is definitely on the low end not getting paid when you think, when you think certainly doesn't help. - Benefits have improved slightly since the acquisition by Toyota but they are still grossly lacking. The 401k match is low and there are very few investment options. Plus, you are not fully vested in your 401k until year 4 of employment. - Their brand new Advanced Manufacturing Center is not advanced at all. The most of their "advanced" pieces of equipment are ten year old machines that they can't keep running. The other cutting edge manufacturing capabilities they have are thirty year old drill presses and lathes purchased from flea markets. All this is to say that parts that come out of that facility are consistently out of spec which causes a ton of heartburn for everyone involved. - Aside from the onboarding boot camp shortly after you start, there are zero training opportunities available to you within the company. The experience for new employees across the board is that they are completely thrown into the fire with zero guidance. - Very limited advancement opportunities due to the fact all of Management is a pretty young group and will be at the company until they retire. - Documentation is non-existent. Processes are non-existent. The typical approach within the company to address issues related to these is to come up some ad hoc band aid and continue to kick the can down the road. - Travel can be last minute and of extended duration depending on the role. - Travel policy is pretty strict so don't expect much benefit from being on the road.

Pros

I met several smart engineers There is almost no red tape young inexperienced engineers seem to be happy there, therefore, sometimes, you end up feeling happy as well.

Cons

Most of the business decisions are made by Bill Jr (The CEO), which is not a bad thing, after all he is the owner, but that limits employee's accountability and restricts process improvement innovation. Travel is a killer. I made the mistake to see only the good glassdoor's reviews and did not consider the traveling issue, mentioned in some of the reviews, which is quite significant if you have a family. As a small company (despite being part of Toyota now) it has a narrow sighted management. For instances, I pushed for adding structure to the some of their processes. This was shut down because some of my peers did not want to "work more" If you see the youtube's cases, some of them, like the conveyor band with chutes, is totally staged. it gives you the impression that the technology is there and it has been proven. Well, that's not the case, you have to deal with several flaws when the system is implemented. Some managers are managers just because they have been in the company for long time, not because they are suitable to mentor or manage people. Certain characters in this company makes your life a bit miserable in the office. They are jokers or bullies. If you come from a bigger company where respect to others at work is well followed, please don't consider joining this company, Bonuses is not followed as they try to sell it when they present an offer to you. Here is the catch: The projects are made in such way that they are invoiced to the customer in phases. You get your bonus from the last phase payment In such phase, you need to save money otherwise you don't get a good margin, meaning, you you get money for your bonus, So, imagine, the 90% of the project has been invoiced, and the company has already secured their profit, now it depends on the customer satisfaction to sign the acceptance, which rarely happens, since they add last minute requests. Most of the projects need to be filled up with extra resources to be able to please the customer at the end. Pouring hours to the project eats up the profit, hence there is no bonus for you. This is a big one, you need to make sure you get the bonus agreement that is favorable to you and is clear.
