Pros

There are some good people here. Management trying to control costs and upgrade research facilities.

Cons

Management does not know how to manage resources at all. They manage through fear. I was there 2.5 years and was laid off. A few months later I was contacted by another department begging me to come back with the promise the role and department they wanted me for would be safe. Three months into the return the manager was let go and over the next 2 years the department was cut from 10 to 5 people with the same amount of work. I was also let go again with the excuse of not enough work to be done.

Pros

Staff generally are supportive of each other; when employees leave they usually say they'll miss the people the most. Many have been able to change careers within the company, switching from research to a support group. Much of the research we do is truly mind-blowing!

Cons

Work experience is highly dependent on who you report to; politics is rife. Senior leadership is disconnected from issues and attitudes among general staff. Lack of enforcement of standardized procedures makes heroics the norm to accomplish goals. Growth is negative; they are tearing down buildings, selling off property, and currently are conducting a buy-out of long-term staff. Morale is in the pits right now.

Pros

Many highly competent, highly experienced technical staff across a wide range of disciplines to use as resources -- especially valuable for someone fresh out of school, and for project managers staffing projects. Good benefits (formerly) and work flexibility. Interesting, challenging projects. Good autonomy (formerly) to pursue projects interesting to you. It's a great place to "be from" because it's reputation is not yet seriously declining outside of the organization.

Cons

Increasing management focus on short-term financial results. Excessive layers of management (someone in my former position would have FIVE layers of management between them and the CEO.) This in turn leads to high overhead burdens and makes selling projects more difficult because proposed costs to clients are too expensive. Inadequate capital equipment funds leading to aging, obsolete laboratory equipment. Declining benefits -- reduced pensions, reduced 401(K) contributions, reduced sick time, one week vacation taken away from staff with 25+ years.
