Pros

-Flexibility with your schedule if you are in graduate school, have kids, or want to plan a vacation. You can always take off time and make up the hours with the kids you work with before or after your absence. -Quarterly training workshops to brush up on skills (which you get paid for). -Many days are really fun playing with sweet children that really grow to adore you. Although we are working on goals and teaching skills, playing is a huge part of our sessions… playing with play doh, jumping on trampolines, and reading stories is a lot better than being trapped in a cubicle.

Cons

-Driving between clients homes can be time consuming. Although you are reimbursed for mileage, you are not paid for this driving time which can add up to a couple hours each day especially when there is traffic. - Some kids can have very difficult behaviors to manage like aggression, tantrums, and bolting. We work to try to reduce the behaviors (its part of the job) but it can be difficult and frustrating at times and make you get home at the end of the day feeling drained and grumpy. - Many things you need to know to do the job you learn as you go. This is fine in the long run but initially it can feel overwhelming at times (specifically in the BT role when it comes to the administrative parts of the job).

Pros

The children are awesome. Such a joy to work with. Decent hourly rate...

Cons

Hours - if you sign up for a full time job, do not expect to receive full time hours. I had asked for 35-40 hours, I never saw more than 28 (and 28 was rare). Also, you could potentially be working from 8 - 630 with 2 or 3 hour breaks in between which you do not get paid for. I found this to be a major inconvenience in my day. Fee for Service - Basically this means, if you do not see your client for any reason (they are sick, no call no show, on vacation etc.) you do not get paid. I would get cancelled on at least 2 sessions a week (which means loss of 6 hours at least). Also I would get no call no shows, where I would drive all the way out to see a client and they would not be there. You do not get paid when that happens, you just waste your time. Lack of communication - The communication at Beacon is horrendous. You have multiple supervisors, none of which will respond to you. There was a situation where I felt in danger, and no one returned my calls, my texts, or emails. Very unprofessional in that sense. Contract - They have you sign a non compete clause which they will not explain to you. No sick time/no vacation time. Poor mileage reimbursement. Do not work at Beacon unless you have your heart set on becoming a BCBA and can afford working Fee for Service for at least the next 5 years.
