Pros

The families are usually wonderful. Parents are often invested in helping their children learn. You help students learn cognitive skills, daily life skills, play skills, and social skills. There are opportunities for you to help students within the community, at daycares, and in toddler groups. You do have overlap with assistant behavior therapists which is helpful for on the job training and keeping lesssons consistent. It's highly rewarding to see each individual student's growth. Working with children on the spectrum in their homes is a rewarding experience.

Cons

They claim you will work 40 hours weekly but that is inaccurate. You often have huge gaps in your schedule and end up waiting between students. Management often will not return calls or texts in a timely manner, if at all. There is a huge amount of paperwork your expected to complete however you only get paid one hour of "collateral" for every five hours you work which mean a lot of unpaid hours completing paperwork. There is no paid time off or vacation or sick time. If you wish to take a vacation you have to either lose the hours or make them up at a later date. The same concept applies to if you get sick. They do provide benefits but you have to work 30 hours weekly but your hours can greatly fluctuate weekly due to cancelations or inclement weather. If you have a cancelation you often lose the hours because finding another student to fill in is difficult with such short notice. They do provide an opportunity to go to school but you pay half and it's highly expensive. And there's no promise to move up in the company.

Pros

The families you work with are so amazing. You get to form great bonds and make a difference. Hearing a child say their first words or master something they used to struggle with is amazing.

Cons

Hardly any communication. Supervisors don't return calls, emails or texts. Scheduling is always a mess and usually leaves you with long gaps just to sit in your car. Not to mention extreme mileage on your car because you'll never get a case as close to home as they claim. Fee for service isn't that great especially with all the cancellations. There's no support. If there is an issue there is no support from higher up staff members. I've witnessed co workers just get ignored and never hear back until they just end up quitting. If you need help you have to hound your supervisor. They put you into the field really fast too it can get really overwhelming. I've witnessed many people training who just aren't ready to be on their own and supervisors won't listen. Lost a lot of great staff members due to not enough training before just throwing them out to be on their own. They offer lots of trainings but they just end up being the same trainings at all the quarterly meetings. Each BT and even each region does things so differently. There needs to be more fluidity in how basic things are done. It gets so confusing if you're an ABT. You have to remember to do it one way with this staff member and another with that staff member where you just want to do what's best for the child.

Pros

Satisfying to work directly with families invested in children's development. Hourly rate as a Behavior Therapist wasn't bad compared to other similar places. Lots of skills to add to a resume, report/assessment writing, graphing, analysis of data, supervisory experience. Gives a basis for ABA.

Cons

In-home isn't for everyone. Fee-for-service means that when people cancel, you get sick, want to take time off - you don't get paid. And people will cancel. Last minute cancellations are hard to fill up. As a behavior therapist (BT), you are capped off at 4 BT hrs per case so any time over that you bill at a lower hourly rate (Associate BT). The benefits are awful especially when you want to take time off. As a BT, expect to do ALOT of work outside of the direct care for reports, graphs, etc. You do not bill for this time, it is included in "collateral hours" that you get for every 5 hrs worked with kids, however you end up doing WAY more than what you're getting paid for. This should be salary.
