Pros

Pay for performance pay-scale.. You start at basically minimum wage in most of the clothing departments, but get the chance for a raise every six months. If you sell $-$$, then your paid $/hr, if you sell $$$-$$$$$, then your paid $$$/hr.. etc. If your work in the commissioned departments (shoes and cosmetics) you can easily earn a decent living.

Cons

When I started working there, the management was great and the employees felt recognized by not only their sales #s, but the work they put into their departments and the help they gave to others. After about 2.5 years of working there, the store manager changed and every single employee was miserable. The new manager had no idea how to run a large volume department store, and absolutely had no clue when it came to managing and building relationships with employees. Even though everyone was scrambling to sell, sell, sell, the sales dropped. Another very important con- don't expect to have a life outside work, receive requested days off, or to get even one weekend a month off.

Pros

Days off during week (except when you have to work on your day off).

Cons

-Work on days off a lot and you don't get them back. -You can't advance if you can't move. -New approach using Operations team strips budget from selling floor (leaving areas uncovered) yet they don't accomplish what they need to due to lack of care, skill, and leadership. -Signage/pricing accuracy is big issue yet prices constantly change, OFTEN with NO notification. -Belk hasn't figured it out yet. A lot of lip service to work life balance, but the bottom line is much different. -If this is supposed to be the retail "employer of choice", get out of retail.
