Pros

- Snacks and beverages in the kitchen all the time. - Nice office space

Cons

- The owners of the company are a husband and wife, and employees can frequently hear them yelling at each other or at employees. - One of the owners will walk around the office yelling at/for people to come to her office.

Pros

Nice view out the windows. Free lunches most Wednesdays. Close to Metro North Railroad, or free parking if you drive.

Cons

To say that one of the principals "politically incorrect" is too polite of a term. She is a bully, and she spews hateful comments to denigrate you and pretends they are jokes. There is nothing funny about my weight and it is not my employer's business. If you complain they will get rid of you instead of fixing the problem. Illegal of course but they think they can get away with it. In place of management - objectives, goals, plans, delegating responsibility to professionals you trust - you have the principals waiting until the last minute (well actually after the last minute) and throwing a tantrum and changing things that should have been set in stone. They are too big for this, it would be fine if it was still very small. There is a lot of turnover, which reflects that they are not exactly savvy about who to hire, and that many people just can't stand working for them and leave quickly. (Part of the problem is they can't keep HR executives because those people have to deal with the principals.) So there is little continuity and it is tough for people to be dedicated when it will not be reciprocated. The evaluation process is half-hearted, again it is not planning, itis just "lets get this out of the way by talking about what you have done in the past few weeks". Not professional, nor is the salary increase "negotiation" process (take it or leave it).

Pros

There are no benefits to working here, unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Cons

Constant screaming, complete dysfunction on every possible level. There is no order to things, and therefore everything gets stalled all the time. Somehow the product sells, and the owners have several homes, fancy clothes, and the rich and famous lifestyle to show for it. The worker bees reap no benefits. In fact, employees do themselves more harm than good by working at BEC; their salary is lower than average (and publishing pays low to start), plus they get no real world publishing experience since this "company" is a big joke.
