Pros

After having worked for several large development companies, including major government contractors, this release reminds me that we have some of the smartest people working for us and that we have some of the most mature processes around. And they're improving all the time. In my position, I'm very lucky. I have a manager who gives me the freedom to do my job with very little interference. We have scheduled 1v1 synch ups every week but they usually take less than 15 minutes. For other pop up issues we communicate as needed but it is usually for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. All together, I probably spend less than 3 hours a week in meetings and all are well managed. The work is continually challenging and I am always facing new issues which is a good thing for me. I have turned down other jobs because they would be too monotonous. Senior management does a much better job in sharing information than I have seen in other companies and they do seek information from the Frontline associates about what is good and what needs improvement.

Cons

As others have mentioned, going public has changed the atmosphere some what, but I work at one of the remote development sites so the changes we have had to face are minimal. My biggest complaint right now are some of the administrative changes being made to improve project management. (If it improves the corporate performance though, it will be worth learning the new system)

Pros

The working environment at Benefitfocus is excellent and the people working there are the most technically accomplished that I have come across in a 20 year career in the information technology field. The company follows an agile software development process and will give anyone a chance to excel in their efforts and advance their career. Managers generally have a hands off approach, providing guidance, then allowing the engineers to design and develop software. At the same time they remain available for assistance when necessary. They maintain open communication on company initiatives and direction. The company maintains a casual working environment and allows flexible scheduling and working from home, plus offers an excellent package of benefits. As with most technology companies, engineers are expected to work hard but at the same time the company provides regular opportunities to unwind.

Cons

There are very few negative aspects to working at this company.
