Culture of Toxic Positivity

Pros

The CEO is a grounded leader who seems to have integrity and genuinely care about employees. Also, the firm provides a decent work / life balance.

Cons

The firm’s statements about culture, well-being, and DEI are hollow. I was mistreated by a leader and not able to be my authentic self at work, which caused my well-being to suffer immensely. I received very little support from HR when I sought their guidance. HR created an environment of toxic positivity in which I was expected to give the leader who was treating me poorly the benefit of the doubt and keep my feedback about his actions to myself. Their messaging was clear - my response to his inappropriate behavior was the issue rather than the inappropriate behavior itself. They only acted when his behavior began to create a legal liability for the firm.

Doesn't live up to the hype

Pros

The onboarding process and training is top notch

Cons

Once you actually start working everything changes. The company has almost no diversity and does not live up to any of the principles you learn about during the onboarding. All the support you were promised is non existent.

Pros

-Good at mentoring and teaching new skills and information -Easy to obtain CPE credits for CPA License -Friendly staff -Good annual raises -Performance review is designed to help employees not only at company itself, but as individuals in the workforce. The skills learned and improved on can be used at other accounting-related job positions. The job in general will teach you a lot and will give you a lot of knowledge regarding pubic auditing. -Good PTO. BerryDunn offers PTO for main holidays, as well as flexible PTO. There is a con with how this PTO is utilized though, which is explained in the con section. -Good paid maternity/paternity leave -Easy to advance/get promoted. They genuinely want to see you succeed and advanced.

Cons

-Lower pay compared to bigger company competitors, especially after you gain 2+ years of experience -Lack of flexibility; must work in office and lack of flexibility between working in office vs working from home. -Long hours, especially after you advance into the senior level or at the very least stay for more than 1 year -Not helpful to educational endeavors. When I was there, there was heavy pressure to obtain my CPA license. They also wanted me to be completely dedicated to my job at all times, even outside of work hours. Very difficult to juggle educational, personal, and work endeavors. -Unsympathetic to personal issues. At other companies, there is flexible PTO or periods that can be taken off to mourn the loss of a loved one due to death or a sudden issue. While PTO in general is good, you only get 3 days off to mourn the death of an immediate family member passing. Doesn’t sound too bad until you discover this is far from the norm compared to some other firms. Usually, the other firms treat these issues a lot better. -Difficult to utilize PTO. To utilize your PTO, you must schedule more than 1 year in advance. Otherwise, you will be scheduled to work during the time you planned to take the PTO off, and must find someone else to cover that week (or days) you had desired to take off.
