Shockingly low psychological safety

Pros

The mission, people, and customers are great.

Cons

This was the most confusing onboarding experience I’ve ever had. Days spent sitting on several hours long zoom trainings. Many different systems where training content is held (CENTRALIZE, people!) Not only that, but I’ve found management is completely disconnected. I have no psychological safety with my manager, and I am not the only one who feels this way. It’s just known that he is terrible and no one seems to care. I don’t feel connected to the company. I’m not connected to my manager. And I feel stuck.

Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts here regarding your time working at BetterUp. We're sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your onboarding experience. As of June 2022, we launched a new in-person onboarding program in an effort to foster greater connection now that it’s safer to do so. We’re always iterating on ways to improve our orientation programs, and we’d be grateful if you shared this feedback via your onboarding surveys or with the Orientation Program Managers, since this will help us continually improve the experience for others. With regards to your comments regarding your direct manager, we always want to create an environment where everyone on the team has the psychological safety and support to thrive personally and professionally. We’d love to better understand the details of your experience so we can work together to resolve your negative experiences. Our anonymous employee feedback platform is always available for those who aren’t comfortable with surfacing feedback directly with their managers or HR, but these are the types of experiences we’d really like the opportunity to address, so if you’re comfortable with it, please reach out to your HRBP. We’re always striving to make sure the whole team has a sense of belonging and psychological safety here. - BetterUp HR Team

Pros

competitive pay, meaningful mission, and peers that are willing to put in the work to bring BU to the next level.

Cons

at the rate BU is scaling there are many problems arising, but none that we can't overcome with the right focus, goals, and mindsets.

Pros

The mission truly profound as are my direct peers Note -they have new hires write on glassdoor in the first week so the things you read on here are not real.

Cons

• Bullying of middle management. For me it’s the right thing to bring this up as I watch several peers be bullied and treated unfairly • Unfair treatment. Absolute favoritism and people held to different standards among peers. One thing is expected of one person but not another in the same role. Favoritism • psychologically unsafe place to work. Everyone is uncomfortable and living in fear. When I first started things were incredibly inspiring, now that we are marching towards an IPO all care for employees is out the window. I’ve actually never felt this lack of care as a person at any other organization. It’s keep your head down…do your work, don’t get on someones bad side. No one will go to HR as HR is close to leaders . No one wants to risk speaking up at the cost of there job. I would reach out to several past employees before working here. If I didn’t love the mission I would leave. It’s hard to see peers being treated in my opinion with manipulation and abusive tactics. If I had to do it over I would encourage my company to buy BU but wouldn’t work here.
