Pros

Has good compensation & benefits.

Cons

Leadership behaves as if they're always the exception, and exploits employees to compensate for lack of leadership accountability . "Fast paced" is code for extremely poor resourcing (lots of single points of failure) and leadership that can't seem to align. Will ask step 1 questions at step 10 of the project. Leads to making last minute decisions and forcing individual contributors to scramble and commit long hours (under the guise of "Grit"). Really poor technical literacy within the company, even within simple tools like Slack, and a lack of self-starter culture (folks are unwilling to learn by doing). Cutthroat internal culture - I saw multiple teams completely laid off and restaffed in just 1 year. Turnover rate is crazy, and anyone who stays is for the promise of an IPO. For an HR company, really poor management. HR enables leadership bias. Talks a big game about what the product does for other companies, but doesn't actually take that advice themselves.

Pros

Amazing people, leaving the company was difficult because I was surrounded by people who weren’t just colleagues but friends. It’s an inspiring mission that BetterUp is working on and changing people’s lives. I would want to work at a company who is a customer.

Cons

Over my time at the company I was overlooking quite a few things with rose colored glasses. With the sprint to an IPO and fundraising a lot of money that forced the company into unrealistic goals things are really getting toxic. First, if you are starting as an SDR here don’t. There is no career path for you, it’s not a priority to build pathways either. Second, the core product is good but all the big bets have fell flat because the concepts were half baked. This has added pressure to other sales units to pick up the slack. Most territories that aren’t coastal regions a majority of reps are seriously missing their huge quotas. These aren’t reps who aren’t passionate or excellent at what they do. Regions have overhired and there just isn’t enough demand. Also, other offerings are catching up in capability and are more flexible, affordable, and easier to do business with. There is a reason for the mass exodus, it’s not just a few bitter people.

Pros

The best branding team in the business, probably! See more below!

Cons

The best branding team in the world would make you believe BetterUp is the best place in the world to work. A great culture, a rocket ship growth company, an amazing product… here is the catch: most if not all of it is smoke and mirrors. I joined BetterUp 2-3 years ago and have put my sweat and tears into this company. Nights, weekends and everything in between. Believe me when I said I was underpaid and overworked but I didn’t always mind it because the CEO Alexi Robichaux and CFO Vinh Le will make it known time and time over again that you’re working at a rocket ship! “You know what that means right? Equity!” That’s right! It means that all that equity that gave you will be worth a ton of money one day right? I mean they keep showing graphs about how much the company has grown and how much we’ll be worth when we IPO one day right? Here’s the thing….. Every person joining BetterUp or currently employed at BetterUp needs to know this. Your equity is worth nearly nothing. Have you ever wondered why the company provides little to no information about what your equity is worth? There was one meeting with our CFO and a lawyer last year that confused anyone in the audience but other than that nothing! I hired a CPA to figure it out for me and I felt like I was dealing with the IRS asking BetterUp’s finance team basic numbers my CPA needed to determine my equity valuation. I mean, these are basic details any company should share with employees but I felt like I was asking going to get fired for just asking them. Low and behold… my equity as a software engineer would amount to about 20k per year. Hired another independent CPA who confirmed the same figure. Alexi and Vinh, where is all that rocket ship fuel actually going if not employees? Folks don’t waste your time here.
