Pros

I truly believe in the company's value prop and I really enjoyed the free coaching I received as a perk. Overall, the benefits were great.

Cons

They say they wanted feedback, but they never actually implemented any rep's input. It was a shut up and dance culture masquerading as egalitarian. Senior leadership clearly had a lot of vision, but they were more interested in org theory than actual execution. There were droves of beautifully written essays/memos/value statements by the founders, but when it came to actually putting any of their lofty ideals into action it just didn't happen - in fact, usually the exact opposite happened. It was a company run by academics, not legitimate operators.

Pros

Some of the smartest colleagues I've worked with in my career. Great misson and you can very visibly see the impact it has on people's lives. If you have never worked at a startup, you will learn a ton in a short time.

Cons

1) Decisons are made in an ivory tower with executives who take no consideration of implementation or the human element. Never share a dissenting opinion with leadership because you're only wasting energy. That is unless you're a Mckinsey or Bain alum in which case they are all ears and will implement what you say immediately. 2) Abysmal communication and working in silos are the norm and often promoted. It's the "year of the manager", but managers get very little cascade or context for their teams and yet are penalized for the team performance. It is incredibly common for you to find out what is happening in your department from a cross functional coworker rather than your manager. 3) Inequitable support functions. Leadership only invests in other leadership and not actual support roles to do the strategy execution. How do you expect any progress to made when you continue to increase Director/VP bloat and not in people who do the actual work? Groups like IT, Brand, Analytics and Sales Ops are selective in who and what they support leaving the rest on their own. 4) No opportunity for vertical progression unless you play internal politics. If you're connected to an OG, don't worry about this. You will get promoted/a bonus/a raise no matter what. If you're not connected, good luck on not getting "downscoped" this year if you already haven't but don't worry you can keep whatever title you want on LinkedIn and that's what's important. 5) Another reviewer put it perfectly - gaslighting. It is so prevalent here and starts from the very top. No matter how bad the emotional abuse or burnout, if you don't feel and act obsessively grateful for working here at all times, the strong implication (and often verbalized) is you shouldn't be here. They dangle the carrot of lives being impacted which sucks you in to take on more abuse. 6) You also saw this in other reviews - it is incredibly common to weaponize the high impact behaviors against you. When you try to hold someone accountable, you are not exhibiting extreme ownership and a bias towards action and should do their work as well.

Pros

The product is great and sells well on the West & East coasts, but the Midwest isn't ready and sees the product as fluffy. Coaches can actually help people be more productive and help them find purpose and belonging in life & work. Great benefits, competitive base salary, and the people are great, even though they're under extreme pressure. Great branding.

Cons

- Equality, Territory, and Leads: Not all AE's are treated equally. Blatant favoritism of tenured reps makes it very difficult to hit goals when you rarely get an inbound lead. (Most deals that are closed are inbound). No visibility into leads either. - Leaders: Managers, RVP's and VP's are too busy to help you learn a very complex sale. Often told to attend "office hours" or "ask your coach" when you need help. Meetings are consistently moved and frequently run over time. - Burnout culture - Literally everyone here is stressed and worried for their jobs. AE's, AM's, and CSM's. - Micro-management: AE Scorecards were implemented in late 2022 to scare reps away who didn't close a deal in their first 3 months.. Many deals take anywhere from 4 months-18 months to close. - Worst onboarding I've ever experienced. You take a 2 month course where you're basically force-fed the BetterUp Kool-Aid. AE's lose precious time where they could be closing deals, and you're already on the chopping block by the time you're out of onboarding. -Incredibly expensive product. - Claims to be a "Blue Ocean" product, when there are clearly other competitors out there like Ezra, CoachHub, and Soundingboard. - Very odd in person "kickoff" events (called Intensive) where you sit through 3 days of Kool-Aid presentations. 1 social event during the whole week. Take your own advice from the Belonging Report and create more space for people to build trust.

We appreciate your candor and value your perspective. Please know that we take this feedback to heart, and the negative experiences you mentioned are not reflective of the culture and values that we strive to promote within our company. We believe in making sure that everyone on the team has an opportunity to succeed – every AE is in the rotation to receive unassigned accounts and the details you outlined about quotas and expectations are actually not consistent with what’s been communicated to the team, so thank you for surfacing this – we’ll be sure to take this back and ensure that everyone is clear on what’s expected moving forward. We acknowledge that we’re striving for a high-performing culture. That said, we are also constantly working to improve our training programs and ways that we can better support the team to set you all up for success. -The BetterUp People Team
