Pros

Individual contributors at the company are truly talented and enjoyable to collaborate with. The work makes a real difference in people's lives and is a source of fulfillment.

Cons

BetterUp is really struggling at its current stage to operate at the level of maturity that is expected as table stakes for a company with its valuation, size, and market presence. The most glaring maturity gap is the disregard for people management / talent strategy. During a recent multi-hour all hands call, the team spent a fraction of the time (I believe it was less than 2 minutes) on the organization’s people strategy. By all measures, the Founders continue to maintain a tight scrutiny on all people processes. Despite having more than 500 employees, it doesn't appear that the organization has a well-defined compensation review process for all employees. The organization attracted great talent over the past few years, but I suspect it will be challenging to retain that talent as the growth trajectory changes and the business becomes older/more mature. It’s a bit surprising that the Board hasn’t applied more pressure on the team to bring in a Chief People Officer in light of internal feedback from pulse surveys, previous Glassdoor reviews, and the drop from 4.5 -> 3.4 Glassdoor rating in the past year and a half. I could touch on the other themes that often come up in these reviews - the gaslighting, lack of investment in ongoing manager training/enablement, the tendency of CEO in-group associates to fail upwards - but I would just urge the organization to prioritize bringing in an established, seasoned CPO who can stop the frantic duct-taping of BetterUp’s people strategy and rebuild trust and confidence that the organization will do the right thing by its people.

Pros

Co-workers on the front lines. I made friends and network pals for life in my time there. We bonded over the fear-driven and incompetent management. Lots of laughs at their expense. That's something I guess. That's it. That's the pro.

Cons

TL;DR - Don't go work for this lousy organization. I know this sounds like sour grapes but I can't tell you how much my life has improved after exiting. Read the reviews and every obviously drummed-up "good" one lists the cons as "this is a fast paced start up, if you didn't come to work hard, this isn't the place for you." <-- comical. I've worked in massively successful startups and have the receipts to prove that this isn't how life works. They treat you very poorly at BetterUp. CEO Alexi is in over his head and won't admit it. Good startup executives know when it's time to hand over the keys to competent and experienced C-level people to take a start-up to the next level. He and his co-founder COO Eddie must be driven solely by ego. I was told in no uncertain terms by upper management in confidence that the hope was that Alexi would step to a CXO role or SVP role out of harm's way and put very specific people in charge who were/are capable and ready. But nah. They just blame economic downturn and "people who don't work hard" for their woes. They did well during the pandemic. Great, lots of companies did. The leadership they have surrounded themselves with is a bunch of yes-men/women. You don't fall in line with this failed direction, you're gone. The saddest thing is that the mission of this company is to bring more resilient, empathetic leadership skills to their customers, creating psych safety for their people and bringing better living (personal and professional) to all employees...of their customers! None of that is practiced in-house. The weasels that they create who turn on their co-workers in pursuit of this "mission" usually find themselves turned on at some point too.

Pros

- Honest, hard working, and accountable leadership - Incredible subject matter in Behavioral Science and coaching - Most vibrant, authentic, and capable group of humans I've experienced - I learned more about myself at BetterUp vs. any other company - BetterUp is going to continue to do big things - Take the time to learn about this company and the incredible people before being turned away by negative reviews - It's a high performing culture that provides you with coaching. You're presented with business challenges to solve and coaches. What more could you ask for?

Cons

Everything that was an 'inconvenience' or a 'change' was honest growing pains that any other company who is trying to capture a market will go through. BetterUp's leaders are navigating a crazy time in tech and are extremely transparent with the strategy needed to win and enablement around the behaviors at the team and individual level. The behavioral science applied to the culture is incredible. 0 bad things to say about BetterUp. Sometimes people think that it's a place to chill because it's a mental health company and forget it's a start up. Don't go to BetterUp if you want to coast. This place is about growth which is a beautiful and hard thing. It's hard work but so is every startup and it's so worth it. Honestly, the amount of psychological support, coaching, and learning that BetterUp provides is second to none. BetterUp is a place for those with a work ethic, low-ego, and are stimulated by problem solving. Alexi and Eddie are great founders. Incredible Recruiting team led by Ryan Weber who is a phenomenal leader.
