Overstock's downwards spiral

Pros

Lots of focus on customer service. Higher pay than average. Friendly enviroment when you work with people at your same level. Lots of information that can be accessed to help your learn more about various fields of business.

Cons

First off the company will give you no privacy even at home. They will micro manage you on a daily basis and even monitor your facebook pages to see what you, your friends and family talk about. Overall the company has been going in a downwards spiral. When you start your employement here you get this idea of this family friendly, understanding, open door enviroment but as you progress throughout the company you gradually learn how untrue that is. A lot of vital information is kept from the employees. Management never gives a straight answer to your questions. Job security is always an issue. The company fires a lot of people every year. Their is a lot of chaos going on behind the veil that they drape over the newer employees. Too much pressure gets put on the frontline reps to improve but no solid answers are given as to what specifically needs to improve. Lots of negative leads and managers. Quality and training seem to have lost touch with the fun and positivity that used to be a major part of their jobs. You will constantly feel stressed at work and it easily effects your home/personal life. If you move up in the company you will get less recognition and be removed from any and all fun activities. People in higher positions deter people from moving up because they are extremely unhappy with their jobs.

Pros

The company has been doing an excellent job of providing relevant and useful training. The technologies we use are current and will help improve my useful skill set, and resume. We are working on projects that matter to the company's bottom line which is nice.

Cons

Their personal time off/sick pay/holiday pay schedule is very poor, and you cannot accrue more time off with increasing tenure. The physical working conditions are very unprofessional as they are removing all cubicle walls and putting people in rows of desks that are lined up touching side to side back to back. So in the room I work in we will have over 100 people in rows of desks so your desk backs up on some one else's desk and your desk is touching the two desks next to it. We are loosing all of our white boards, which are necessary for working out some software engineering problems. This arrangement would not be bad if you had one small team in a bull pen type area with white boards but when you have over 100 people in a single room with no white boards the noise, and visual distraction level becomes unbearable. This will have the effect of destroying all team communication/colaboration, kill all personal focus and creativity, as people fight constant distractions

Pros

Coworkers are very fun, friendly, and diverse. Products on website are fairly interesting. Frequent hiring because of employee turnover.

Cons

Company in general has little respect for employees. Frequent schedule changes with little (1-2 business day) notice. Shared computers with other employees. No personal or secure storage at desk. Everyone in customer service is hired as a temp (no benefits, no holidays) even if you are hired for a specific permanent position. Company won't pay for time it takes for employee to log into computer and log into time keeping website every day. Employees penalized for being sick, even with H1N1 warnings posted everywhere. No employee discount. HR uses only paper employment applications (which they frequently lose).
